About Selina
It’s an undeniable truth that Selina Fenech has been lost to the realms of fantasy since she first laid hands on books. Faced with overwhelming heartache that our own world wasn’t so full of magic and adventure, Selina did the only thing she could. She began creating her own worlds of magic by painting and writing.
Then one day, the other children told her that books weren’t cool. Selina turned away from books and writing and submerged herself in her visual art. She became a successful fantasy illustrator, supporting herself with sales of her art that now have a worldwide following. Australian readers will recognize Selina’s fairy and fantasy artwork from bookmarks available in most major Australian bookstores. But the desire to tell stories remained. Because books are cool. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.
Born in 1981 to Australian and Maltese parents, Selina lives in Australia with her husband, an unnamed cat, and a lorikeet who’s far too clever. During her life Selina has found ancient Roman treasure, survived cancer, had knights joust at her wedding, been mugged for doughnuts, made a living as a visual artist, and shared her imaginary worlds in paintings and now in her novels.

When emotions give supernatural powers, what does love mean?

I did notice a link on your official website for a radio interview and as soon as I have sound, I’ll investigate that, but until then, I was wondering how you pronounce your last name. I have a terrible feeling I’ve been saying it wrong for years and really want to be able to share my love of all things Selina with others without getting such an important detail wrong.
Lots of people say my last name wrong (and lots of people also call me Selena). I don’t mind either so much, I do have a tricky name after all, but it’s nice when people get them right.
Fenech is with a hard CH. So it’s pronounced “Fenneck”, like the Fennec Fox (how cute are they?! http://www.google.com.au/search?q=fennec+fox&hl=en&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=g2zOTYbzOIK2vQPjnoHoDw&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1920&bih=955 ).
I knew I was saying it wrong. I’m so sorry! I’m glad to know how to say it properly now. I promise to spread this knowledge far and wide. If it makes you feel better, my name is tricksy, too. My father spelled a common, ordinary name wrong on the birth certificate and since then, the world has tried to spell it the usual way even though it’s not spelled that way. Even my grandmother has always gotten it wrong. At least it is easy to pronounce though.
And the Fennec Fox is seriously cute!
Wow I never thought I was mispronouncing your name! I’m glad to know. I’ve never been good with pronouncing anything right tho. haha My instincts with pronunciation are pretty bad & embarrassing. XD People usually mispronounce my last name too tho so I understand. Hehe that is a cute fox!
This is written so beautifully Selina!
I especially love how you describe why you were drawn into writing, because I can really relate to that feeling of needing to escape the mundane world to places full of magic and adventure.
Just one question, what does this bit mean?
‘Because they are, by the way.’
I reread it several times and I don’t really understand that part. Hope you don’t mind me asking!
Oops, I changed the wording of that bit so it makes more sense now. I had something else going on in my head at the time
beautiful bio selina!
yay love the Fennec Fox too lol even got the nick name red fox from my hubby (me being British and having red hair lol) like everyone here i cant wait to read more and see how the story unfolds i just love that you’re writing too as i’ve always loved your art
