Chapter Twenty Three, Twenty Four, Twenty Five and Twenty Six
(The rush to the big ending!)

The basic rundown-

Eloryn is healed, but devastated at the loss of Alward. She makes a deal with the fae in order to see the truth of her birth. The details of who Memory is come together and the dragon returns, this time on their side, offering Memory a gift in return for having freed it from its slavery. Memory learns the power to Veil Door, and they travel to Eloryn’s second safe house and make a plan to confront Thayl. Memory has concerns about the plan, and contacts Thayl in her dream to make a different plan of her own.

Insights-

The deal Eloryn makes with the fae will have implications in the next books!

The figure leading the ritual for Thayl that is seen in flashback will also be important in following books. The ritual and how it really affected Memory and her magic will also be explored in much greater detail.

” If their plan worked, restoring the Maellan line and the Wizards’ Council to power, then he and Eloryn wouldn’t be allowed together any more than Loredanna and Thayl were.” This is a big one for the next books!

Author’s Thoughts-

The scene with Memory and Eloryn chatting in bed is one of my favourite in the book. I’m not sure why, I just love the friendship between the two that comes across then.

I realised that I made things difficult for myself in having not just twins, but identical twins in this story. But I was also interested in the concept of how different identical twins could become when growing up in completely different environments. In terms of physical differences, when Memory first appears she has many features which make her a lot different to Eloryn- her bruises, piercings, hair cut and colour, clothing and that she is practically anorexic while Eloryn is more plump. Even for identical twins, those features are going to make her appear very different, but over the course of the story those features were removed (all except her hair cut), even their weights started to become similar as Eloryn lost weight (barely ate and was getting way more exercise than she was used to) and Memory ate everything in sight through the story ;)

Favourite Quote/Moment-

“No matter what you may think, you do not belong in Avall. You. A vessel too full. Liable to spill and spoil all around.”

And…

“So what’s the plan, Princess? As much as the idea of seeing Thayl again makes me want to barf out my happy thoughts, I’m with you. I want back what’s mine.”

And…

“You won’t hurt us?” Memory asked, confused.
“Indeed no.” Words came slowly, an earthquake of sound. “I come to grant a boon for my release from imprisonment, in the last time I shall ever be in service to a human.” Its last word held such distaste it made Memory squeeze Eloryn tighter.
“Thank you,” Memory said in a squeak, feeling even more like a mouse. “For not killing us.”
The dragon’s head gave a shallow nod. “What else would you have from me?”
“What the hell’s a boon?” Memory hissed into Eloryn’s ear.

Let’s Discuss

What do you think Memory is planning to do after her deal with Thayl?

What about Eloryn’s original plan? Did it sound OK? What would you have done in their situation?

Chapter Twenty Two

The basic rundown-

The forest boy reveals to Memory how he knows her. Roen tries to keep Eloryn alive but she is slipping away. Memory and Will (yay he has a name!) find them and Memory is able to heal Eloryn.

Insights-

Not many insights in this chapter since this is where a lot of things finally get revealed and spelled out!

Author’s Thoughts-

Memory’s character flaw (well, one of many) is that she puts a selfish and superficial desire for family over the real people around her. Family is just a “thing” she desires and she has to learn what family really means and the value of the people around her. In doing so she almost loses the one real family member she has.

Why didn’t I reveal Memory’s real name here? Because it’s not important to this story. It will be properly revealed in the next book where it is important because Memory’s past and current selfs come into conflict.

Favourite Quote/Moment-

Her eyes flickered over his shirtless chest and a trace of color made it to her cheeks.
“By the… Don’t blush now, you haven’t enough blood.”

Let’s Discuss

Did it bug you that I didn’t reveal Memory’s old name here?

Roen reveals how being a seventh son of a seventh son means he is “blessed” but can you tell what the cursed part is?

Chapter Twenty and Twenty One

The basic rundown-

Eloryn is betrayed by one of the Wizard’s Council and Thayl arrives, capturing her and the rest of the council. Eloryn and Roen are both badly injured. Thayl reveals the truth of who Memory is and as she fights to escape, she frees the dragon who turns on the men who kept it as a slave. Roen gets Eloryn away and Mem tries to follow but is carried off the other way by the forest boy.

Insights-

Mem uses and quotes Roen’s slight of hand trick he taught her to get the flute off the hunter.

During the fight when Mem is pinned under a body, the way she gets free is a bit vague but will be important and explained in the next book!

Thayl accidentally calls Eloryn “Loredanna”, her mother’s name, when the dragon hurts her, because she looks so much like her, and it must have felt to Thayl a bit like losing Loredanna again.

Perceval, the man who talked to Mem at the masque, is one of the men the dragon kills.

Author’s Thoughts-

Big stuff happening with lots being revealed. It’s a show of Memory’s character that when she got the flute that controlled the dragon, she didn’t try to control the dragon herself but rather destroyed the flute so no one could control it.

In terms of character and story arcs we’ve just reached the darkest moment for our characters. I’ll talk more about Mem in the next chapter after more is revealed, because this is an important section for Eloryn too. Eloryn’s character flaw is that she does what others tell her too or allows others to look after her too completely. In this section she realises this, that she should be the one going to help Alward rather than trying to have some one else do it for her, but she then makes the mistake of still putting it in the hands of someone else again. This proved to be a fatal mistake for Alward, and possibly for her too.

Favourite Quote/Moment-

After the last of the priests passed away it was only ever her, Alward, and the books. Often all three together when she was still small enough to curl up on a chair with Alward and be read to.

Let’s Discuss

Now we know who Mem is, or who Thatl says she is. Did you see the clues leading to this? Did you guess?

Chapter Seventeen, Eighteen, and Nineteen

The basic rundown-

The girls fight to save Roen from being hanged and he reveals to them that he is a thief. They hitch hike with a wagon only to find its owners aren’t what they seem. Finally they reach their destination and make contact with the Wizard’s Council but they aren’t all they were hoping for.

Insights-

Roen had gotten the girls drunk so they’d stay in the room while he tried to get the dragon flute on his own. Since he got caught he told the girls that he was a thief to try and make them hate him so they would go without him and leave him to a fate he believed he deserved.

Mem shows she can think quick to solve problems a few times in this section.

The thugs knives are all made of bronze or copper. Mem’s knife proves to be a much harder metal.

Mem doesn’t like being touched and reacts violently to being grabbed!

We learn Roen is a seventh son of a seventh son, “cursed and blessed”.

Mem confronts the others about them thinking she is a demon and they apologize. Mem also shows she admires who El is, not just jealous of her looks.

The banshees say they are taking “the magic ones” to some one for a prize. This is important in later books!

Mention of the Pact and Branding is made, it seems as though if a human attacks a unprovoked or vice versa then they can be Branded which is a death sentence.

Holding Mem’s iron knife reopens El’s spark of connection that had been dodgy since she got hit with the poison bolt the night before.

The town Kenth they go to is dead land and Roen says that the fae bring prosperity to the land and if they leave it becomes like this.

Author’s Thoughts-

I like the idea of the girls going to rescue Roen while badly hungover. Ir was hard to write a fight a scene with so many people involved. That’s why the thugs ended up with the nicknames Mem gives them.

During the fight Will takes on the biggest of the thugs that Mem nicknamed Giant. He tackles him away and the fight takes place “off camera” but in my mind I imagine it like the fight between Westley and Fezzik in The Princess Bride.

Favourite Quote/Moment-

“Sorry for taking so long.”
“No apology needed when you bring food.”
