Chapters Fourteen, Fifteen and Sixteen

The basic rundown-

After escaping Thayl at the castle, Memory and Eloryn split up from Roen to avoid being tracked and meet up again at roadside inn. Roen heard some men at the bar bragging they were wizard hunters who controlled a dragon. He thinks they will be safe in their room since no one saw them go in, and they have a little time to relax. Things get a bit steamy between Roen and Eloryn, and the forest boy finally speaks with Memory, warning her about the dragon and how it’s being controlled. That night Thayl contacts Memory in her dreams and tells her he knows who she is, and will help her if she brings Eloryn to him. He also says that it wasn’t him who killed the queen. He and the queen had been in love, and  he says it was Alward who killed the queen when they tried to escape together. Memory wakes up confused the next morning but there’s no time to think about it all then, because some thugs outside have Roen captured and are going to hang him as a thief!

Insights-

We learn in this section why Eloryn thinks her and Alward being found was her fault. That she used her magic in front of the children she taught in order to save them from being crushed when a bookshelf fell.

Roen also shares some of his feelings with Eloryn, explaining why he’s a bit of a ladies man, but why he acts so polite and proper to her.

Thayl shares his history with Memory, a lot of which doesn’t match up to what others had been telling her. Stories and motivations are starting to get a lot more complicated.

Author’s Thoughts-

In a much, much earlier version of Memory’s Wake, there was another main character that was with the group for most of their adventure. A tall, buxom, red-headed barmaid. The barmaid Roen is caught flirting with in this section is my little homage to my character who got cut from the story.

When writing the song about thieves that the thugs are singing, I had to take a few liberties! In order to make it rhyme they sing “Cutpurse, dipper, footpad or a booter-free“, all different names for thieves, but really it’s Freebooter, not booter-free ;) But it’s my fantasy world, which is close but not quite like earth, so their language has just evolved a little differently. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it!

Favourite Quote/Moment-

I have a few from this section!

“I could maybe try something? Anything is better than freezing to death, right?” Memory said.
Eloryn hesitated, needing a moment to compose herself. Memory started muttering random words and phrases to do with heat and warmth. Eloryn turned to give her warning, but a flame already sparked in front of them, lighting the dry leaves at their feet on fire. Memory swore and smothered it with the wet bulk of her dress.
“OK, burning to death? Not better. Point taken.”

And…

“Understatement,” said Memory, reaching for a cup.
“You know, sometimes what you say makes barely any sense. The rest of the time it makes none at all.” Roen half smiled and tipped his cup to her.

And…

Memory waved limp-wristed at them. “I just, I… bah. My trains of thought are leaving the station too quickly,” she slurred and pushed her way outside.

Let’s Discuss

The conversation between the forest boy and Memory has a VERY strong subtext. He is saying one thing, but meaning something else (similar). What do you think he’s trying to tell Mem?

Chapter Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen

The basic rundown-

The next day Memory has recovered and she, Eloryn and Roen prepare for the masquerade ball that evening where they will be able to mingle without as much fear of being recognised. Memory learns some magic. Roen and Eloryn leave her on their own to go and meet the contact in the resistance, and Memory stumbles upon them having a conversation about her and eavesdrops. Eloryn reveals who, or what, she thinks Memory is, and Memory is not happy about it! At the ball, Memory has the chance of seeing King Thayl who has just arrived. When she does, she recognises him from an earlier dream, and he also recognises her. Memory, Eloryn and Roen only just manage to escape by swimming through deep water channels.

Insights-

Earlier in the story, Memory jokes about naming her bruises to keep track of them because there are so many. In this section she actually calls them by name,  Bill, Ben, Bob and Barry the Bruises.

When discussing magic and what or what isn’t currently forbidden and why, Roen mentions metal workers as a specific class of people who use magic. Being as there is no iron in Avall, they use behests to make other metals stronger.

Also on the topic of magic, there is a specific reason that Mem can’t cast the light spell. El explains the light is actually a type of living fae energy and Mem is carrying on her something the fae don’t like!

This section has a Cinderella lost shoe reference, but the person who comes looking for Memory with her lost shoe is far from Prince Charming.

In her private conversation with Roen about Memory, Eloryn mentions that she gave Memory some bread when she first met her to test whether she was some kind of changeling or fae in disguise. The fae of Avall won’t eat bread (this is also common in folklore and mythology of our world!) and to share bread is a standard test in Avall to make sure someone is human.

Author’s Thoughts-

“Hair and clothes were as crumpled as each other; even a few visible wrinkles from her mummy-wrapped slumber still marked her skin.” In this bit, I wanted to say “sheet scars” but I wasn’t sure if that was just something only I say!

The forest boy is very good at moving through bushes and trees. I always thought that is this were a role playing game, that he would have the Woodland Stride skill. He’s there looking out for Mem again in this section of the book, but I always imagined when she jumps into the water at the end he’s probably thinking “I JUST saved her from one thing and here she goes again!”.

Favourite Quote/Moment-

They emerged into a stone paved courtyard where a group of men in a range of armor and uniforms stood about in serious discussion. Perceval placed her against a hedge, winking at one of his friends who looked their way. Memory tried not to feel like a groupie.

Let’s Discuss

How would you react if your friends thought you were something not human?

Chapter Ten

The basic rundown-

Eek! Dragon! Luckily the dragon is still partly trapped in the veil door Memory summoned it through, and Memory and the others manage to escape. They arrive at the Duke Lanval’s castle and Memory passes out from the effect of the “impossible” magic she used. Eloryn and Roen go to see the Duke who says he will introduce them to his contact in the resistance, who will help Eloryn get to the rest of the remaining Wizard’s Council for safety.

Insights-

Hints of Roen being a flirty scoundrel again in this section of the book. I like the idea that he’s snuck girls into the castle before, regularly enough that the servant Uther expects it, and is not even surprised to see him bring two girls in!

There are some mentions through the story of Memory being quite skinny, including in this section. It isn’t said outright, but she’s skinny due to an eating disorder. Now she can’t remember her past, there are a lot of references to her eating or wanting to eat through the story, since having having no memories means she has forgotten the emotions/reasons for the eating disorder.

Roen mentions that the Duke has no children of his own, which is why he’s so fond of having Roen around, and that Thayl had tortured his wife. He even notes that Lanval’s wife is still having nightmares. It’s hinted at but not explicitly said that it was the torture that Lanval’s wife suffered that meant they haven’t been able to have children. Nasty stuff. When Thayl first took over the kingdom, he had a very powerful magic on his side but not much else. He needed the support (willing or otherwise) of some of the more powerful noble families of Avall. Roen’s family fought Thayl to the end, but Lanval gave in, agreeing to support Thayl (at least to his face), to stop the torture of his wife.

Author’s Thoughts-

There are a lot of details that are in the story in my head which don’t fit into the book. Because of using limited points of view, there are things the other characters know that the character we’re currently with doesn’t know. For example, in the escape from the dragon, I know that Eloryn would have been using her magic to keep their horses refreshed and able to keep riding hard like they did, but of course, because we’re in Memory’s point of view, there’s no way to work it into the book.

Favourite Quote/Moment-

Lanval leant back in his chair again, gesturing to Eloryn. “And what of the Princess’s wishes, how do her plans meet with yours and your parents, for returning her to the throne? Does she want that, considering she has done naught but hide these last sixteen years?”

Let’s Discuss

Ok, I admit I’m stumped and can’t think of any questions for this chapter, so instead I just invite you to RUN AMOK! AMOK I SAY! Let loose whatever random thoughts book related or otherwise!

Readalong Chapter 08 and 09

Chapter Eight and Nine

The basic rundown-

Roen returns the next morning with bad news- Alward has been captured, and the Wizard hunters got a good look at Eloryn and Memory and are out searching the city and farmlands for them. It’s decided the girls are to travel to Duke Lanval, a trusted friend of Roen’s family, who may be able to provide further help. Roen is to lead them their but when they are close to being caught by Wizard Hunters, Memory accidentally casts a spell which summons the dragon to them.

Insights-

There are a lot of clues in Memory’s dream at the start of Chapter Seven about what happened to her. It’s very dreamlike and mixed in with other new memories she has, like running from the dragon, but in there are some of the only other memories she has left.

We see Eloryn using magic again more clearly, and get some explanations as to how it works. Everyone in Avall can connect to magic, but in order to use it properly you need the right spell words. The Wizards of Avall have spent centuries of research to refine their spell words and make spells that work, and either memorize the complicated words or keep scrolls they can read in order to cast long spells. The general populous only know a few simple spells, like the light spell, that are only a couple of words long. Eloryn is different. With her gift of communication she can use the magical language to ask anything of just about anything without memorising specific spells. Much of her magic is limited to her creativity and other rules of the physical world.

Roen’s mother shares the story of what they found when they tried to help the queen the night she died, and the story doesn’t match up to what Alward had been telling Eloryn all these years. Secrets and lies are starting to be uncovered.

Roen’s mother also explains that Roen only guessed who Eloryn was because he’d grown up with a crush on a portrait of Eloryn’s mother, who Eloryn looks very much like (the amulet she dropped was also in the portrait).

When in Roen’s POV we start to get an impression that he feels like he can never live up to his parents expectations, that there’s something about who he is (apart from being a thief) that means they are unhappy he’s the only son they have left. Roen’s mother even mentions that they never planned to have Roen.

Between Roen’s relationship with a woman named “Scarlett” in the city, and his comment about the Draper’s many daughters, it’s clear he has been a bit of a ladies man.

And of course, the Snow White reference- ” Despite having a pretty dress on, she still felt far from fairest of them all.”

Author’s Thoughts-

There have been a few times in my life, particularly after travelling where you’ve stayed in a few different places, when I’ve woken up in the middle of the night confused about where I was and how I got there. I figured Memory must feel this way a lot, and had to include it in the story.

Favourite Quote/Moment-

“The ancient words give the meaning, but it’s the spark of connection that lets us communicate our behests. The internal connection to magic that you feel, in here,” Eloryn put her hand to the centre of her chest. “The Pact has meant all people of Avall have the spark of connection within. Don’t you feel it?”
Memory turned the concept around in her mind, wondering if she could connect to magic in any way. She looked down at her chest, feeling the warmth within her she’d known these last few days. She thought it was just panic-induced heartburn.

Let’s Discuss

Why do you think Roen was so anxious in Chapter 9?

Now there have been more clues, who or what do you think Memory is?
